The Sagittarius dwarf irregular galaxy (SagDIG): distance and star formation history
نویسندگان
چکیده
The distance, star formation history and global properties of the Local Group dIrr galaxy SagDIG are derived based on an [I−(V −I)] colour–magnitude diagram of ∼ 1550 stars. A distance of 1.06±0.10Mpc is obtained from the I magnitude of the TRGB. This corresponds to 1.17 Mpc to the barycenter of the Local Group and 1.34 to M 31, being DDO 210, at 0.35 Mpc, the nearest galaxy to SagDIG. The metallicity is estimated from the colour of the RGB to be [Fe/H] = −2.45±0.25. SagDIG is hence a probable member of the Local Group and a candidate for the lowest-metallicity star forming galaxy known. The radial density profile of the galaxy has been obtained together with other integrated properties (magnitude, colour and central surface density). The galaxy density profile is fitted by an exponential law of scale length 27. ′′1, corresponding to 140 pc. The star formation history of SagDIG has been analysed, based on synthetic colour–magnitude diagrams. The galaxy is currently in a high star formation activity epoch, forming stars at a rate about 10 times greater than the average for its entire life. This is a common feature of galaxies classified as dIrrs.

Near-infrared photometry of carbon stars in the Sagittarius dwarf irregular galaxy and DDO
Aims. We investigate the intermediate-age asymptotic giant branch stellar population of two Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies to characterize their carbon star population in near-infrared (IR). Methods. Our work is based on near-IR photometry complemented with optical ground based and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. Near-IR photometry is based on our and archival J and Ks-band image...
متن کاملNew abundance measurements in UKS1927–177, a very metal-poor galaxy in the Local Group
We present new results from optical spectroscopy of the brightest Hii region in the dwarf irregular galaxy UKS1927–177 in Sagittarius (SagDIG). From high signal-to-noise spectra, reddening-corrected line flux ratios have been measured with typical uncertainties of a few percent, from which the oxygen abundance is rediscussed, and new abundance estimates are derived for N and Ne. The O abundance...
متن کاملStellar Populations of the Sagittarius Dwarf Irregular Galaxy
We present deep BV RI CCD photometry of the stars in the dwarf irregular galaxy SagDIG. The color-magnitude diagrams of the measured stars in SagDIG show a blue plume which consists mostly of young stellar populations, and a well-defined red giant branch (RGB). The foreground reddening of SagDIG is estimated to be E(B − V ) = 0.06. The tip of the RGB is found to be at ITRGB = 21.55 ± 0.10 mag. ...
متن کاملThe Globular Cluster M54 and the Star Formation History of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy
We present a deep color-magnitude diagram in the V I passbands of the globular cluster M54, a member of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. The data extend below the cluster’s main sequence turn-off, allowing us to estimate the cluster’s age. We find that M54 is 0.5–1.5 gigayears older than the Galactic globulars M68 and M5. In absolute terms, the age is comparable to the published age estimates of t...
